Rancho Cordovan of the Year

When we talk about Rancho Cordovan of the Year, we’re not just recognizing someone who had a good season. We’re honoring someone who changed the game's trajectory. Someone who stepped onto the court, looked at the scoreboard of our community’s needs, and said, “We can do better.”

And in Rancho Cordova, that leader is Carrie Johnson.

Some leaders manage programs. Others transform a community's soul. Carrie is the latter.

A longtime resident of Rancho Cordova and more recent Executive Director of the Rancho Cordova Food Locker & Community Food Hub, Carrie took the ball in 2022 with a bold vision: food assistance should feel nothing like charity — and everything like belonging.

She saw families walking through the doors carrying more than hunger. They carried worry. Pride. Circumstances beyond their control. And she asked a powerful question:

What if we treated every person the way we would want our own family to be treated?

That question changed the playbook.

Instead of a transactional model, Carrie envisioned a grocery-store–style marketplace—a warm, welcoming space where families can choose their own food, move at their own pace, and feel seen rather than processed—a place where dignity is the starting lineup.

And under her leadership, that vision is becoming reality.

The new 6,600 square foot Food Hub facility on Don Juan Drive — opening this May — isn’t just construction. It’s a full-court transformation. It will feature:

  • A complete grocery-style marketplace
  • Expanded refrigeration for fresh produce and proteins
  • Classrooms for nutrition education and community programs
  • Space for partnerships with farmers, schools, and health providers

This isn’t just a building. It’s a promise.

A promise that parents can shop with their children without shame.

A promise that elders are greeted with respect.

A promise that fresh, healthy food belongs to everyone.

Carrie didn’t just draw up the play — she’s been in every part of the game. Fundraising. Design. Community partnerships. Strategy. Execution. She is building more than walls. She is building a future where no one in Rancho Cordova has to face hunger alone.

And the stats? They’re championship-level.

Today, the Food Hub serves approximately 4,000 people every month. Nearly 20 percent of the households served are Ukrainian, Afghan, or Russian immigrant families.

Through partnerships with local grocery stores, the organization recovers 2.5 million pounds of good food for our neighbors.

That’s not just impact. That’s a game-changer.

But here’s what makes Carrie our MVP — it’s not just the numbers.

It’s the way she plays.

She remembers names.

She listens without judgment.

She comforts overwhelmed parents.

She celebrates small victories — a child excited about fresh fruit, a family finding stability, a volunteer discovering purpose.

Her compassion isn’t performative. It’s practiced daily. Quietly. Consistently.

Volunteers follow her because they trust her.

Families return because they feel safe with her.

Partners invest because they believe in her vision.

Carrie is not just running a food program. She is rewriting what it means to care for a community. She is strengthening systems that nourish bodies — and spirits. She is distributing food — and restoring pride.

In basketball, the greatest players aren’t always the loudest. They’re the ones who elevate everyone around them. The ones who make the assist. The ones who steady the team in the fourth quarter.

That’s Carrie.

She strengthens us.

She connects us.

She reminds us that dignity is not a luxury — it is a promise.

Carrie has built more than a facility. She has built hope. She has built belonging. She has built a championship culture of compassion.

Carrie Johnson is Rancho Cordovan of the Year; a true Most Valuable Player.
