Maxine Yoshida
Distinguished Community Service
Maxine Yoshida
An interesting fact about cowboy philosophy is that they don’t think much about age. Cowboy philosophy focuses on authenticity, strength of character and a can-do spirit – not on how many birthdays you have under your belt.
Taking all that into consideration, Maxine Yoshida must be a cowgirl. Now in her 80s, she is a leader and innovator in the care of others at the Rancho Cordova Food Locker. This 30-year Rancho Cordova resident has been knocking it out over there for a decade.
Maxine began volunteering when the Food Locker operated on the St. John Vianney campus. At that time, the food locker served approximately 80 families per distribution—around 960 families each month. Today, the food locker serves over 4,000 families each month and Maxine has been an integral part of the growth and success every step of the way.
Over the years, Maxine has taken on numerous roles at the Food Locker. She has greeted guests with warmth, packed groceries with care, meticulously sorted produce and more.
However, her most remarkable contributions have been her focus on the Food Locker’s unhoused guests. She prepares special bags filled with ready-to-eat food and toiletries, ensuring that even our most vulnerable neighbors receive care.
Her compassion extends further with her creation of a special “Store,” stocked with miscellaneous items not included in regular distributions. Maxine organizes and staffs the store, which is now named "Maxine’s Store" in her honor, allowing guests to “shop” for essential household items like laundry soap, shampoo, coffee, rugs, and bath towels.
Thanks to Maxine, these items reach those who need them most, at no cost.
Maxine’s dedication doesn’t stop there. During the holidays, she prepares special gift bags for children visiting the Food Locker with their families, adding a touch of joy to their experience.
Despite being in her 80s, Maxine’s energy and dedication remain unmatched. She arrives early, stays late, and works tirelessly to support our community.
Her strength, love, and dependability have left an indelible mark on everyone she encounters. Maxine’s contributions have not only helped the Food Locker grow as an organization but have also deeply touched the lives of countless individuals and families.
A cowboy truism is that “You don’t need many friends, just the ones who ride by your side no matter the storm.”
Maxine, your unparalleled commitment and service to the Rancho Cordova community make you a true beacon of hope and kindness -- a friend in the storm. It is a pleasure to honor your long service to the neediest in our community with this Distinguished Community Service Award.
